The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for
human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote
socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of
providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). It is the focal point
for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.


UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was established in ‎2011 in
Cairo, Egypt, and provides technical cooperation and capacity building for ‎18
countries across the Arab region. The Regional Office promotes and implements
policies, programs, and operational projects in UN- Habitat's focus areas, at
regional, national, and local levels, aimed at achieving sustainable urban
development in the countries of the region, and providing technical
cooperation services, upon request from governments.


The UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) internship is for ‎6
months. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of the Regional
Communications Associate.


The selected intern will support in raising the visibility of UN-Habitat's
work at the regional level by drafting bilingual (Arabic/English) social media
content, human interest web stories, and press releases. Support is extended
to monitoring and analysis of media coverage and social media analytics as
well as the production of various visibility materials to promote UN-Habitat's
work and events.


In the context of the COVID-‎19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to
undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa
issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be
willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the
entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be
determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the
supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the
Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the
location of the intern.


The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the
intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.


Under the direct supervision of the Communications Associate, the intern will:
* Support writing social media content for regional social media channels;
* Support social media content and production of visibility material through graphic design, content development
and translation;
* Assist in developing, monitoring and reporting on social media campaigns for key events and UN international
observances;
* Communicate with communication focal points at the country offices to compile social media content, events and
impact stories to be shared across the region and on UN-Habitat platforms;
* Support media relations and visibility for key events, including writing press releases in English and Arabic and
monitoring media coverage;
* Support writing web stories and website content updates for UN-Habitat Website and other related websites;
* Undertake other duties as may be assigned by his/her supervisors

setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to
client.
Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following
requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or
equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program
(minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent


Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).


Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a
personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;


Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of
different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to
try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


Preferred areas of study:
Social Sciences, Mass communications, Public relations, media and journalism
or other
related fields.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship
Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should
benefit the United Nations during your internship.


Experience in writing social media content is required.


Experience in designing printing and/or digital materials (i.e. social media
cards, flyers, fact sheets, etc). is desirable.


Experience in translation of content from English to Arabic and vice versa
(i.e. social media content, key messages, press releases) is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations
Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and
Arabic is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

United Nations Considerations
According to article ‎101, paragraph ‎3, of the Charter of the United Nations,
the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of
