تفاصيل الوظيفة

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for
human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote
socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of
providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org).

UN-Habitat Egypt is continuing to grow rapidly to address the ever-growing
needs of Egypt's urban cities. In this light, UN-Habitat is launching a number
of projects, initiatives, and on the ground activities in the mobility sector
to promote sustainable mobility practices and policies. Mobility is
fundamentally about granting access to opportunities and empowering people to
fully exercise their human rights.

Reductions on the reliance on personal motor vehicle use through the promotion
of public transport and non-motorized modes of travel (NMT) is key if cities
are to be engines for economic development. The mobility portfolio aims to
enhance the movement of people and, at the same time, alleviate problems
associated with reduced accessibility due to congestion. The portfolio aims to
also transform cities to be more liveable with cleaner environments, which
promote the use of public transportation rather than Single Operating Vehicles
(SOVs), which take up most street space and increase pollution.

The sustainable mobility projects in process are managed by the Basic Services
and Climate Change Programme (BSCC). Key projects include establishing Egypt's
first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that connects new cities with the
capital, as well as Egypt's first public Bike-Sharing system to be implemented
in central Cairo. This is continuously complemented with initiatives,
activities, and complementary projects that ensure the advancement of the
bigger picture of sustainable mobility in a holistic and people-centered, and
gender-sensitive manner.

In this respect, the BSCC programme is now looking to expand and replicate
ongoing projects in the mobility portfolio, advocate last mile solutions and
experiences, assess the diversity of civic-, public-, and private-sector
stakeholders in various potential projects and initiatives, and enhance the
communication and awareness of sustainable mobility by showcasing our projects
and its aims at global events and by creating a visibility and communication
plan. The intern will be under the supervision of the Programme Officer, UN-
