The United Nations Human Settlements (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations
system's designated entity for addressing and promoting socially and
environmentally sustainable human settlements, development, and the
achievement of adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). UN-Habitat Egypt
is continuing to grow rapidly to address the ever-growing needs of Egypt's
urban cities.
UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) was established in 2011 in
Cairo, Egypt, and provides technical cooperation and capacity building for 18
countries across the Arab region. The Regional Office promotes and implements
policies, programs and operational projects in UN-Habitat's focus areas, at
regional, national, and local levels, aimed at achieving sustainable urban
development in the countries of the region, and provide technical cooperation
services, upon request from governments. UN-Habitat ROAS covers all the
operational activities and projects in 18 countries across the Arab Region;
currently, with 12 active country programmes.
UN-Habitat Regional Office for Arab States supports the activities and
communications work in the country offices on the region and works toward
promoting the interventions and projects done in the region along with the
mandate, which focuses on achieving sustainable urbanization. The regional
office works with partners and stakeholders to implement the UN-Habitat
Strategic Plan 2020-2025, which emphasizes achieving tangible results in four
main domains of change, namely: reducing inequality and poverty, shared
prosperity in cities and regions, promoting climate action and urban
environments, and preventing crisis and response in urban areas.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat),Regional Office
for Arab States (ROAS), Cairo, Egypt Internship is for 6 (six) months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to
undertake the internship remotely given constraints regarding visa issuance,
international travel, and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing
and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety
of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined
based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking
into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time
difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the
department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background, the
interns' assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Communications Associate, Office for Arab
States (ROAS) the intern will:
* Support writing social media content for regional social media channels;
* Support social media content and production of visibility material through graphic design, content development and translation;
* Assist in developing, monitoring and reporting on social media campaigns for key events and UN international observances;
* Communicate with communication focal points at the country offices to compile social media content, events and impact stories to be shared across the region and on UN-Habitat platforms;
* Support media relations and visibility for key events, including writing press releases in English and Arabic and
monitoring media coverage;
* Support writing web stories and website content update for UN-Habitat Website and other related websites;
* Undertake other duties as may be assigned by his/her supervisors.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following
requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or
equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program
(minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a
personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of
different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to
try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies:
Social Sciences, Mass communications, Public relations, media and journalism
or other related fields.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship
Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should
benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Experience in writing social media content is required.
Experience in social media content creation and production of visibility
material through graphic design, content development, and translation is
desirable.
Experience in media relations and creation of visibility for key events,
including writing press releases is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations
Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in written and oral English and
Arabic is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is
an advantage.
