Country Head of Legal

• Monitor and influence legal developments; ensure that the business considers legal trends and risks in the business strategy.


• Represent Novartis Legal to outside stakeholders, in particular the government and industry associations.


• First point of contact to Head of Data Privacy, MEA for DP matters. It is expected from the Head of Legal to collaborate with DP Head including provision of trainings, updates to Novartis relevant docs and templates, and execution of DP initiatives cascaded by the DP Head.


• Risk assessment: proactively follow local regulations & deals proposed to happen, assess risks, ensure the right stakeholders are aware of it and assist in pulling a comprehensive mitigation plan(s).


• Build an external network outside of Novartis, encourage the legal team to build their network and share best practices, this is to enable a customer centric organization.


• Directly handle legal issues related to business development, alliance management, litigation, corporate governance, and labor law.


• Directly negotiate agreements for the local organization, i.e., distribution agreements, licensing agreements, promotion agreements, etc.


• In collaboration with the Novartis IP function, conduct risk assessments regarding IP protection and enforce and defend Novartis IP in the country.


• Limit litigation risk exposure, including risk derived from clinical trial issues and employee relations.


• Monitor and interpret the legislative environment in which the business operates to ensure the business understands and meets its legal obligations as laid out in statutes and regulations, in addition to various compliance procedures required under the Capital Markets Authorities, Stock Exchanges as well as Retirement Benefit Authorities as relevant.


• Contribute to the development and execution of the functional strategy.


• Take responsibility for the management of any litigation instituted by or against the business and ensure cost effective management.


• Provide proactive legal commercial support to the business through internal legal resources and as appropriate through specialist external legal support.


• Ensure adherence to Novartis Outside Counsel Policy, develop the Country Outside Counsel Panel and manage external law firms.


• Manage Legal budget.

Minimum requirements
* University degree and Bar admission
* English language
* Extensive experience in legal practice (>‎10 years)
* Preferably significant (> ‎5 years) experience in legal practice related to the pharmaceutical industry
* Proven ability to proactively provide insightful and timely legal support to stakeholders across a functionally and geographically dispersed organization
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Persuasive negotiator
* Solid understanding of the Pharma industry and customer needs with an ability to deduce the implications for Novartis and implement solutions
* Strong leadership skills
* Sound experience in Pharma litigation
* Passion for business integrity topic and impeccable integrity track record
* Strong knowledge of compliance issues facing Novartis businesses
* Ability to represent Novartis externally on integrity / compliance topics
* Experience with corporate responsibility and with balancing global standards and local cultures
* Ability to successfully work in cross-functional teams
* Strong ethics & high personal integrity
* Natural authority with the character to resist business pressure
