Staff Scientist

JOB PURPOSE:
* The role will focus on developing new methods, executing, and coordinating microscopy and surface analysis within the analytical team, across multi-functional teams, and with external collaborators to provide effective analytical support to SABIC business groups including, polyolefins, thermoplastics, catalysts and other materials.
* As member of Analytical Science team, you will drive clear discussions with internal stakeholders and Analytical Science colleagues on translating business needs into analytical solutions related to especially material characterization using advanced microscopy and surface analysis. The characterization techniques include optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and other surface characterization techniques.
* Design and execute experiments using microscopy and surface science expertise, provide in-depth data interpretation, communicate results and solutions to customers, present and publish when appropriate. Translate the knowledge and cross-train colleagues as required.

KEY ACOUNTABILITIES:
* Develop and execute original methods for microscopic or surface characterization of polymers and other chemical materials to support innovation, production, or product applications. The characterization techniques include optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and other advanced surface characterization techniques.
* Design and execute experiments using microscopy and surface science expertise, provide in-depth data interpretation, communicate results and solutions to customers, present and publish when appropriate.
* Translate the knowledge and cross-train colleagues to enhance their skill sets.
* Stay current on novel microscopy and surface characterization techniques and methods. Maintain contact with relevant instrument vendors. Identify needs, organize and perform feasibility studies and assessments, and drive the acquisition of new instruments/techniques.
* Ensure equipment availability through timely maintenance and troubleshooting. Follow safety procedure, build and maintain high safety standards within the team.

Problem solving/Decision making:
* Provide technical and personal leadership in the area of material characterization and be able to apply and deliver hands-on using different microscopy techniques, such as, SEM and TEM to support a spectrum of long and short term polyolefin R&D activities ranging from synthesis, formulation and compounding, to final application.
* Manage resources and prioritize tasks, effectively communicate with stakeholders to understand their needs and assess the level of importance and urgency.
* Actively engage with key stakeholders to foster ideation and innovation in the Analytical Sciences. Contribute to team activities in analytical science, participate in cross-functional and global safety, quality improvement and knowledge exchange programs.

Minimum Qualifications:
* PhD degree in physics, material science, chemistry or other related fields.
* Good knowledge of polyolefin synthetic processes, formulation and compounding as well as applications is a plus.
* Knowledge of advanced technology, diagnostics and troubleshooting of microscopy equipment.

Minimum Experience:
* Solid laboratory experience (‎15 years or more) with specialized expertise and hands-on experience in microscopy (SEM and TEM) and other surface analysis techniques, including operating related instrument, performing sample preparation, and interpreting data.
* Demonstrated expertise of polymer material analysis (including both polyolefin and engineering thermoplastics) via advanced microscopy and surface analysis techniques is highly preferred.
* Experience in preparing high-quality technical reports and documents, preparing and delivering technical presentations
