The British Embassy in Cairo has a vacancy for a Climate Change
Adviser , job grade Higher Executive Officer (HEO).
Main purpose of the job:
It is an exciting time to be working on climate and environment in Egypt, and
particularly at the British Embassy in Cairo. With the UK having hosted COP26
in November 2021 and in the process of handing over COP27 Presidency to Egypt,
the UK-Egypt climate partnership is in full momentum.
The Climate Change Adviser will be instrumental delivery of the UK-Egypt
climate partnership. To this end, they will be heavily involved in supporting
delivery and follow up of COP27 to be hosted in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt in
November 2022, while also ensuring that the legacy of COP26 is maintained.
They will play a key role in development and delivery of the British Embassy
Cairo's portfolio of climate initiatives including policy and programming on
environment, energy and water. They will work across the office to ensure that
climate and environment issues are mainstreamed across our wider portfolio in
Cairo.
The post holder will support the exciting expansion of our climate work across
the portfolio. They will draw upon technical best practice, centrally managed
programming and HQ expertise to ensure climate and environment to provide
technical input and advice into our climate interventions.
Main duties and responsibilities:
* Support the delivery of COP27 and follow up on implementation of any any COP26 and COP27 initiatives.
* Provide technical input on delivery of the UK-Egypt climate partnership including on decarbonisation, resilience, mitigation & adaptation policy objectives, clean growth, energy transition, nature-based solutions.
* Build a network of trusted relationships with Government of Egypt, civil society and implementing climate partners to maximise the impact of the UK's diplomacy and programming. Advise and support senior UK officials and Ministers on climate issues.
* Assess and design credible climate projects, taking into account UK comparative advantage, local context and sensitivities, GoE priorities etc. Oversee implementation and delivery by engaging delivery partners and relevant Government line Ministries.
* Provide a coordinating function across all UK government bilateral and multilateral climate interventions (including EBRD programmes, WB programme, CSSF, work with British Council etc).
* Link with other UK government entities in Egypt (Department for International Trade, British International investment, British Council) to ensure that initiatives in their space are complementary to embassy activity on adaptation/mitigation/loss and damage.
* Support the mainstreaming of climate across the FCDO portfolio and diplomatic workstreams including support for Egypt's role as a regional convener on climate. Work across teams to ensure coordination.
* Support Ministerial and official visits from the UK related to COP26/COP27/COP28 and climate events in Egypt. This could include planning and advising on visit agendas, coordinating with media colleagues, and supporting in events as required.
* Hold a corporate responsibility objective.
The above list is not exhaustive and the jobholder will be required to be
flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required. The job description may

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
* Fluency in English and Arabic, both written and spoken. Minimum level required C1 under the CEFRL or equivalent. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
* Relevant first degree in a climate or environment related subject.
* A minimum of 2+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organizations or agencies, preferably in climate change.
* Strong technical and scientific knowledge of climate change, particularly loss & damage and adaptation, as well as international climate change policy, with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience.
* Strong networking and influencing skills to build trusted relationships across a range of stakeholders in Egypt, regionally and centrally in London.
* Ability to respond quickly to evolving contexts and opportunities for partnerships on climate.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience of managing diverse and senior level relationships.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
* Master's Degree in a relevant field.
* Knowledge or experience of programme management and relevant skills.

Eligibility:
Applicants must have the legal right to live and work in Egypt.
Remuneration:
The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration
package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of USD
2,277 per month subject to insurance and tax as per the usual regulations
based on a 36 hours per week. However, employees who are not liable to pay
local income tax on their Mission salary may have their salaries reduced by
the equivalent local income tax amount.
We offer a competitive package including medical benefits, performance related
bonus, recreational facilities, opportunities for job related training &
development, etc. There are no other allowances payable as part of this
package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection
with this position.
The role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term basis for one (1)
year, subject to three (3) months ' probationary period.
The British Embassy is committed to helping staff develop in their careers

full suite of DIT and FCDO learning and development opportunities including
the FCDO's Diplomatic Academy, training in the UK, and will be encouraged to
join DIT's trade profession. We also provide regular in-house learning

You will have to complete the mandatory online training courses including
Diversity and Inclusion. Also, courses offered on UK government climate change
and energy policy, including accreditation into the FCDO's climate cadre.
