At the forefront in the battle against COVID-‎19, G42 Healthcare established
Biogenix Labs, the UAE’s first COVID-‎19 accredited large-scale throughput
laboratory. It facilitated the #4Humanity clinical trials, the world’s first
Phase III trials for an inactivated vaccine against COVID-‎19. Beyond COVID-‎19,
G42 Healthcare plans to conduct research and development on genomics, imaging
and
diagnostics, and digitisation programmes to support the health of future
generations. This includes a collaboration to set up a wastewater monitoring
lab in Abu Dhabi, as well as automating and optimising central testing
laboratories in the UAE.


Responsibilities:
The Organic Chemistry Junior Scientist assists the Senior Scientist in solving
complex problems in a scientific, technology or engineering domain and is
primarily responsible for supporting the analytical testing requirements of
the wastewater monitoring laboratory and interpreting scientific data of
moderate to difficult complexity. The Organic Chemistry Junior Scientist
supervises work and performance of laboratory technicians and with their
assistance checks and pre-approves the test results obtained from sample
analysis in order to satisfy the needs of the project’s Stakeholders.


Job Tasks:
‎1. Comply with all safety, health and quality control programs and procedures
as applicable.
‎2. Maintain the strictest confidence in relation to sensitive information
whether formally or informally recorded.
‎3. Assist in the creation and maintenance of a research and innovation agenda
and roadmap to support the business needs of the laboratory wastewater
monitoring.
‎4. As part of the Scientific team, support compliance with regulatory and
external Party Governance polices.
‎5. Promote and maintain quality in all services, ensure continuous quality
improvement measures are in place, follow SOPs and Best Practices as
instructed in the relevant laboratory documents, and ensure that SOPs and
Quality Assurance tests are maintained.
‎6. Participate in activities aimed at improving the quality of workflows and
processes or improving parts of existing protocols.
‎7. Comply with and support audit processes, reporting on these when directed
to do so.
‎8. Support good laboratory practices in the laboratory.
‎9. Assist with the design planning, and analysis of experimental protocols.
‎10. Work with the laboratory and provide guidance on the identification,
development, optimization and ongoing competency of organic chemistry test
methods, in conjunction with the Lead Chemist.
‎11. Implement Standard Operating Procedures that are compliant to the
policies for the organization.
‎12. Identify quality indicators for meaningful monitoring and trending
laboratory test results to be included in dashboards for decision makers.
‎13. Consider risk assessment in decision making processes
‎14. Provide guidance to Laboratory technicians in operating analytical
equipment (e.g chromatographs, spectrometers), ensuring that is calibrated and
maintained at all times, and carrying out its maintenance of equipment
according to the manufacturer’s instruction.
‎15. Ensure that equipment is used in the correct manner to obtain optimum
results, perform basic troubleshooting of technical problems should they
arise, and inform the line manager of equipment malfunction.
‎16. Approve test results obtained by Laboratory Technicians.
‎17. Support the Senior Scientist and Lead in interpreting test results and
advising the Stakeholders in the decision-making process.
‎18. Participate in stock control and management of reagents, consumables,
standards, etc…
‎19. Participate in training and education sessions for department staff i.e.
induction, technical training, mentorship, etc…
‎20. Complete and maintain all regulatory requirements, such as licensing and
certification, where applicable and within established time frames.
‎21. Maintain professional knowledge by attending lectures, seminars or online
education units.
‎22. Apply statistical tools, to analyze data and identify root cause and
problem resolution.
‎23. Identify and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement
(internal/external).
‎24. Comply with training requirements including personal development.
‎25. Train and develop technical personnel.
‎26. Perform other duties related to the work environment as directed by
management.


Qualifications:
‎1. MSc degree in Analytical Chemistry with specialisation in Organic
Chemistry or other relevant science or engineering discipline.
‎2. Proven expert proficiency and lead role in conducting organic chemistry
analyses. (Including the most complex analyses) using all wastewater
monitoring laboratory equipment.
‎3. Up-to-date experience (within the past ‎2 years) of organic method
techniques and quality control requirements for EPA methods and "Standard
Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater” (especially related to
testing OCPs, PCBs, VOCs, SVOCs, PAHs, PPCP, Steroid Hormones, Illicit drugs).
‎4. A minimum of two (‎2) years of experience working in a Chemistry lab
environment, ideally in water or wastewater treatment.
‎5. One or more years of experience as an Organic Chemistry Scientist.
‎6. Proven experience in liquid and gas chromatography and mass spectrometery.
Operating, within the past ‎2 years of LCMSMS, GCMSMS, HRMS systems.
‎7. Performing sample preparation for organic chemistry analysis, such as SPE,
LLE, SPME, SPME–trap, Headspace–trap, Thermal desorption.
‎8. Knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis.
‎9. Use of equipment software and Laboratory Information Management Systems
(LIMS), preferably Labware.
‎10. Familiarity with Microsoft Office (primarily Excel, Powerpoint, and
Word).
‎11. Familiarity with ISO ‎9001, ISO ‎14001, and ISO ‎17025.


Knowledge of:
‎1. Principles and practices of organic chemistry wastewater analysis.
‎2. Standard organic chemistry laboratory concepts, practices & procedures.
‎3. The theory, method development and validation of analytical test methods
and instrumentation for standard methods for water and wastewater analysis
techniques for aggregate organic constituents and individual organic compounds
as per Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater, 23rd
Edition.
‎4. Best practices for method and result data handling and information
management.
‎5. Best practices for Quality Assurance and Quality Control of test methods
and processes.
‎6. Principles and applications of statistics.
‎7. New technology and recommendations for test method and testing capability
enhancements.

Physical requirements:
‎1. Ability to sit or stand at laboratory benches and instrument computer
screens for extended periods of time, and tolerate the extended use of
standard laboratory safety equipment,
‎2. Must be able to work safely in a hazardous environment with potential
exposure to and presence of toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, radioactive and
other tissue destructive chemicals, bacterial cultures, wastewater and
physical hazards. May work in areas containing dust, exhausts, fumes, and
vapors.
‎3. Ability move light to medium weight objects and sample-laden carts.
‎4. Dexterity and agility to handle fragile items, including glassware.
‎5. Use of personal computer, keyboard, mouse and monitor for extended
periods.
