Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the
United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and
girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women
and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights,
humanitarian action and peace, and security.
The Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) covers ‎17 countries in the Arab
States region and provides direct support to UN Women Country Offices in
Morocco, Tunisia / Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq/ Yemen, and the State
of Palestine. ROAS supports Country Offices and UN Country Teams to assist
national governments to fulfill their gender equality commitments under the
applicable national and international laws and in furtherance of national and
regional implementation of Agenda ‎2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
ROAS maintains a bilingual regional website and posts on its social media
channels in both English and Arabic.
The Communications Team works cross-cutting in supporting all programmes
including Women’s Economic Empowerment, Women’s Political Empowerment,
Violence against Women, and Women Peace and Security / Humanitarian Action.
The Team is also responsible for formulating and implementing communications
and advocacy strategies including communications and visibility plans, and
developing various communications materials following including brochures,
press releases, documentaries, and infographics, as well as supporting the
visibility of outreach and advocacy.
ROAS wishes to invite applications for a Translation Intern. The Intern will
report to the Communications Specialist and will have responsibilities as
indicated below.
Duties and Responsibilities
Translate, transpose and review the translation of diverse texts from English
into Arabic and vice versa, including:
Content for the ROAS website e.g. stories, press releases;
Social media posts;
Subtitles for audiovisual materials;
ROAS reports, strategic documents, and minutes of the meeting.
Contribute to the expansion of ROAS Arabic-language lexicons, through the
identification and documentation of translations for new and emerging
terminology;
Support the use of UN Women’s gender-inclusive language guidance and lexicon;
Any other related tasks as directed.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
University studies in one of the following disciplines: Translation or Mass
Communications, Communication, Linguistics, Journalism, Political Science, or
other relevant subjects is required;
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or
equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first
university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have
graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the
internship within a one-year period of graduation, or Be enrolled in a
postgraduate professional traineeship program which is part of a degree
programme and undertake the internship as part of the program requirements.
Language:
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in Arabic and English are
required;
Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
