Position Summary
This is a full-time permanent position to support WDRC research safety.
Ensuring a safe lab and pilot scale activities, requires the ability to work
independently and requires hands-on knowledge/ experience with laboratory
instrumentation and bench testing.

Major Responsibilities
 Oversees the safety activities of the laboratory.
 Performs regular internal safety inspection/audits which should include fire
and electrical safety, biosafety, ergonomics, chemical segregation and
hygiene, general housekeeping, waste management, personal protective
equipment, and other hazardous materials or procedures.
 Oversees chemical inventory, obtains MSDS as needed and assessment of
chemical hazards for particular processes.
 Reviews all laboratory safety policies and creates or modifies policies and
procedures, as necessary.
 Documents all safety related activities.
 Coordinates new employee and WDRC safety training.
 Enforces daily safety practices.
 Oversees safety competency for each lab employee.
 Maintain the safety records for the WDRC staff and researchers.
 Maintains records of exposures, medical examination follow up and employee
return to work requirements.
 Serves as Laboratory Safety Representative at KAUST HSE.
 Coordinates with KAUST HSE team to implement safety policies and procedures
in WDRC Labs, and to identify any unsafe condition and hazard in WDRC labs.
 Communicate with KAUST HSE team for safety training and waste management
requirements.

Other Responsibilities
 Provide trainings on the spectroscopy instrument to the users (students and
researchers) to enable them to conduct independent research.
 Assists Lab Manager in maintaining research equipment specially with the
spectroscopy section and scheduling preventive maintenance and procuring
supplies for the smooth operations.
 Willing to work on the weekends and on emergencies situations.
 Provides day-to-day support to students, researchers and faculty.

Competencies
 Hands-on experience with Fourier-transform infrared, inductively coupled
plasma, optical emission spectrometry, and Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy.
 A general working knowledge and hands-on experience with Gas Chromatography,
High-performance liquid chromatography and Ion chromatography a plus.
 Experience and can work independently with problem-solving skills, while
maintaining close interaction with Faculty and Lab Manager.
 Experienced, reliable and available in maintaining lab safety protocols both
regular and nonregular basis.
 Knowledgeable and/or experienced in water related disciplines/areas.
 Familiarity with university-based scientific and engineering research and
graduate education, both mission and operations.
 Ability to work collaboratively and foster a cooperative work environment
and strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Qualifications
 BSc/MSc degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or other scientific
discipline with at least five years' experience in a chemical process
environment.
 Requires hands-on experience in laboratory work and research safety,
proficiency with various Spectroscopy techniques will be an added advantage.
 Demonstrated proficiency in all forms of communication, along with solid
time management, teamwork and organizational skills.
